There are plenty of leadership styles that many people profess to understand. However, leadership is straightforward to dissect. Leadership is YOU. The term “leadership” is very subjective. Every style of leadership you use is a tailor-made attempt to lead both yourself and others toward the goal that you strive for.The first leadership goal a person must have is first to serve themselves. This is not an unhealthy thing to say, nor an unreasonable statement. This is why situational leadership is so effective. However, a leader must be in control of themselves first before they can attempt to lead other people. In addition, in order to diagnose other people, they need plenty of practice. That practice can only come through that wonderful thing we call life. Life teaches us lessons that no algorithm, or program could ever duplicate. This said, unless a leader has sufficiently led themselves into a place of understanding, wisdom, and knowledge, they will never relate to the right people. It takes a deep understanding of self in order to adequately lead others. The picture at the top of the page is a great visual representation of how the growth cycle works.Introduction to the Circular ContinuumEvery person goes through continuous cycles of growth. I call this the circular continuum. The continuum has a beginning and an end. However, unless the right momentum is applied, with one decision, the individual, or entity, will not break through the cycle and elevate into the next continuum. This is crucial to understanding in leadership. You start with a current state and aim for a target all the time. Yet, the decisions are not made timely, or the wrong decisions are made based on the path of least resistance. Momentum is the only force you can use to break through the cycle and enter the new one. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of mental programming creates a self-awareness that transcends the physical plane.Does this sound deep?Good… because it genuinely is.So, the next time you hear a premise about leadership that insists on one objective style that will cure the disease of inefficiency and always produce results, examine the source, and realize that leadership is what you make of it. It is what YOU believe it is. Yet, it is what everyone thinks it is at the same time. Leadership is a paradox. It is subject to the perceptions of people. Those perceptions will be based on things that will be out of your control. In summary, the greater the pain you have experienced in your life through mistakes and hardship, the better you are at understanding the perceptions of others, and the greater the growth you will experience.Since the continuum moves in cycles, you are destined to experience the situation that was once a mistake but is now a stepping stone you are unafraid of.
